THE CHOICE (2016)
Directed by Ross Katz and based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks with a screenplay by Bryan Sipe this is a film for the romantic in all of us. If you are adverse to any of the Nicholas Sparks books and their many film incarnations then this film is not for you. However if you want to be moved by an old fashioned, somewhat clichéd but beautifully executed film then this is one for you. Burr Steers film and screenplay is based on a parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith based on Jane Austen’s beloved PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (Jane Austen has received co-writing credit though I think she’d hardly approve) with its twist being that it imagines England of 1813 having been overtaken with the walking dead thus complicating an already complicated but brilliant novel. A film both written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen of legenday fame, strives to be something that it simply cannot be, a really good movie. I so wanted to like this movie for not only the filmmakers involved but its magnificent cast and production design evoking an era in Hollywood filmmaking that is simply no more. Unfortunately what I found was a film that simply tried too hard, succeeding only part of the time while being sunk by a ponderous production and inept hand
