CAROL (2015)

Todd Haynes’ rather brilliant adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel THE PRICE OF SALT, with a screenplay by Phyllis Nagy, skirts a rather controversial topic with the upmost taste and beautiful production values. The picture is set in 1952 New York City and details the relationship of an older woman going through a rather difficult divorce and a young aspiring photographer whom she has fallen in love with. Much more than just a lesbian love story, this is a depiction of the times in which this story takes place and the danger one could place oneself in, in revealing too much of one’s life. Beautifully acted by Cate Blanchett as Carol Aird, Rooney Mara as Therese Belivet, her object of desire, and Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacey and Cory Michael Smith. A beautiful production design by Judy Becker, stunning costumes by Sandy Powell, great cinematography by Edward Lachman, with a compelling score by Carter Burwell all help to brilliantly recreate a time that has been all too long forgotten.
