POINT BREAK (2015)

This film directed by Ericson Core and written by Kurt Wimmer is a remake of the 1991 film of the same name that starred Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. The high price of producing films has gotten seemingly out of control causing many studios to try and hedge their bets with a series of remakes and sequels to try and insure a healthy profit margin. What it means for audiences is a feeling of been there and done that which in turn leads to a creative type of wasteland. Though the efforts can be quite enjoyable as is the case here, it should be pointed out that rarely are classic or memorable films ever remade. This story just like the first details a group of extreme athletes who seemingly commit crimes to right wrongs that have been committed against nature and humanity while seeking to complete the Ozaki 8, a list of eight extreme ordeals to honor the forces of nature. Enter a former extreme athlete, who is now an FBI agent who attempts to penetrate this group by joining their ranks and comes to be nearly seduced by their way of thinking before realizing he has a job to do and bring them to justice. This film stars Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah, the FBI agent and Edgar Ramirez as Bodhi the leader of the group committing these eco-crimes for the sake of nature and humanity. The film is essentially a fantasy, since these characters are engaging in acts of athleticism that would be fatal to 99% of us regular humans. I enjoyed the film as a form of escapism which is really all I think it was meant to be.
