SHERLOCK: THE ABOMINABLE BRIDE (2016)

This special episode of the PBS series SHERLOCK was released in U.S. theatres for two nights prior to its premiere on PBS this past Sun. Jan. 10, 2016 and judging from the sold out audiences people were more than willing to shell out $15-$18 for a chance to see their favorite detective on the big screen, myself included. Directed by Douglas Mackinnon and written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, it shows the characters for the first time in Victorian London, since the series is an updated version of what Arthur Conan Doyle originally wrote. Wildly inventive and brilliantly masterminded, this was a twist on what we are regularly treated to in this reimagined world of Sherlock Holmes. Beautifully cast with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson, Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves and Una Stubbs as Sherlock’s very motherly but perplexed landlady. This episode very cleverly skated between the modern and Victorian eras without confusing too many of us who are easily confused and had some genuine moments of sheer fright before everything was explained by Sherlock with a loyal assist from the good Doctor.
