GODS OF EGYPT (2016)

A fantasy film directed by Alex Proyas based on a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless concerning ancient Egyptian deities is a woeful affair that tries to be entertaining but simply is not. Overly saturated with CGI (computer graphics imagery) effects that actually get wearisome after a very short period of time, this is a film that has been done many times before despite a cast that does its best to read their lines as if they were reciting Shakespeare. Filmed on a lavish budget of $140 million, this still can’t rescue a film that really didn’t need to be made in the first place. A fine cast of actors that include Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Rufus Sewell, Geoffrey Rush and a particualry good Gerard Butler acting voraciously in front of mostly blue screens can’t rescue an insipid plot and film that there is no excuse for.
