ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (2016)

A film loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS directed by James Bobin with a screenplay by Linda Woolverton and produced by Tim Burton is a film more in common with its predecessor (ALICE IN WONDERLAND) than the actual novels they are purported to be based on. Though I would dare to say that the first ten minutes were worth the price of admission, the rest of the film was a bit heavy handed and though not lacking in imagination, was not exceptional in its overall execution. Well acted by Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham-Carter as the Red Queen and Sacha Baron Cohen as Time, there was a preponderance of CGI (computer graphic imagery) effects which I felt was to the films’ disadvantage. Shot on a budget of $170 million dollars, I would have preferred more practical sets and less animated characters, perhaps using actors made up to look like the various animals and creatures on screen.
