THE LOBSTER (2016)

A film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay he co-wrote with Efthymis Filipou is a type of Orwellian/dystopian drama that has an absurdist premise that singles are given 45 days to find the perfect mate or be turned into the animal of their choice. On the flip side there are the radical loners living on the edge of society in the woods that forbid personal/sexual relationships who are as brutal in their approach to members who break their code of conduct, forcing everyone to dig their own graves in the event of a transgression. Beautifully cast with Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Lea Seydoux and Ben Whishaw among many others, is never the less a highly disturbing film that I wish would have explored the fact of how the society got into the state it is now in. I have to give the filmmakers credit for creating something that I frankly had never seen before, but how this will go over positively with mainstream audiences is something that I greatly doubt will happen.
