CAROL (2015)
Todd Haynes’ rather brilliant adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel THE PRICE OF SALT, with a screenplay by Phyllis Nagy, skirts a rather controversial topic with the upmost taste and beautiful production values. The picture is set in 1952 New York City and details the relationship of an older woman going through a rather difficult divorce and a young aspiring photographer whom she has fallen in love with. Much more than just a lesbian love story, this is a depiction of th
THE 33 (2015)
Patricia Riggen’s film with a screenplay by Mikko Alanne, Craig Borten, Michael Thomas, Jose Rivera and Hector Tobar is based on the true 2010 event when 32 Chilean miners and 1 Bolivian miner were trapped 700 meters underground and over the case of 69 days how an international rescue team sought to free them from their dire predicament. This film has rather realistically recreated the story of what it was like for these men trying to survive on limited food and water, debili
LOVE THE COOPERS (2015)
I always love it when a film that I knew virtually nothing about excepting having seen the previews, which I wasn’t overly impressed with, blows me away (and I don’t even like the title). In a simple word I loved this movie which was directed by Jessie Nelson from an original screenplay by Steven Rogers. The studio is marketing it as a silly comedy, but what it is, is an insightful view into family life proving once and for all that every family is dysfunctional to varying de
THE LADY IN THE VAN (2015)
Nicholas Hytner film based on playwright Alan Bennett’s screenplay which in turn was based on his memoir and play of the same name, details the story of a homeless elderly woman, Mary Shepherd, who parked her van in Mr. Bennett’s driveway temporarily only to stay fifteen years. In many ways a beautiful story of tolerance of an individual who was clearly emotionally troubled, I never the less found it a bit ponderous and laborious at times to sit through. Seeing the magnificen
THE PEANUTS MOVIE MOVIE (2015)
As a film that seeks to reinvigorate the Peanuts' feature film franchise, I felt that it succeeded in it’s mission to appeal to those of us who grew up with the original films in the theatres and the various TV specials. What I saw were as many adults in the theatre most of whom did not have children as children themselves, who were seeing the Peanuts’ characters on the bigscreen for the first time. It’s been about 35 years since the last Peanuts film was in theatres but the
SPECTRE (2015)
Sam Mendes’ film based on a original screenplay by John Logan, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade & Jez Butterworth based on the character of James Bond by Ian Fleming is the 24th film in the franchise. Though obviously filmed on a lavish budget of between $250-300 million dollars I did not find the film as compelling as it might have been though the actors involved elevated the entire enterprise even when the script came up lacking. James Bond makes it his mission to uncover the inter
