Gavin Hood’s film from an original screenplay by Guy Hibbert details the intricacies of waging a war with drones half a world away from the point of conflict and what exactly are the responsibilities of governments in the collateral damage department. Beautifully thought out and executed with a particularly outstanding performance by Helen Mirren as a Colonel in English intelligence, this is a picture that deals head on with the consequences of a bombing raid and what can be morally excused in the aftermath. Excellent support is provided by Alan Rickman in what I believe was his final film performance and one that I’d like to see him nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi, Jeremy Northam, Phoebe Fox and Iain Glen are among many fine actors who supply added support to a story well worth telling.
