ELVIS AND NIXON (2016)

Liza Johnson’s film from a screenplay by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal and Cary Elwes is a fictional account based on a true life meeting between Elvis Presley and President Richard Nixon that occurred on December 21, 1970. Since this incident took place before President Nixon started recording everything that went on in the Oval Office, the story that transpires is a supposition of what may have occurred during that most unusual meeting of two men that you would assume had nothing in common. What I found was a very entertaining movie with a real star turn by Kevin Spacey as Nixon that could land him a Best Supporting Actors’ Oscar nomination come early next year. Though this is clearly more Michael Shannon’s film and concentrates more on his portrayal of Elvis Presley, I didn’t find him as believable in the role as I did Mr. Spacey who was spot on as the former President. It’s a entertaining film though a bit slow moving in areas, I never the less enjoyed it and the way the production designer, Mara LePere-Schloop recreated the time of the early seventies.
